Alternative Flooring | One of the many popular natural fiber carpet manufacturers like to use is “Coir”. Coir carpets are great alternative flooring than tiles and wood. It gives a certain boost in the aesthetic levels of your home while being eco-friendly as it is made of natural processes. Coir is a traditional textile made out of coconut husk that is abundant in India.
Carpets usually made out of coir are woven using traditional but intricate weaving patterns such as panama, herringbone and boucle. These patterns make this carpet an excellent choice for many people who want to add some character and eccentricity into their homes. Latex is poured at the back of the produced carpet to help it mold its shape and retain that shape. The natural colors of coir are brown and gold which gives it an elegant touch and make it a versatile carpet for any home. The colors are modified through bleaching only.
However, Coir rugs are not ideal for use where you lie down, due to their rough material. Coir rugs are best placed in areas not to sit on or lie down, such as doors or under furniture to protect your floor from scratches.
Alternative Flooring
Another major disadvantage of using coir for carpets is that they have proven to be easily worn and torn with heavy use and foot traffic. It has been attested that wool will prove to be a much more durable choice than coir. But since it has a coarse and rough texture, people instantly think that it will last them longer. Wrong. It may be durable enough to withstand normal domestic use and foot traffic but it can’t hold too much of such. Heavy use and foot traffic has proven to make carpets made of coir prone to wear and tear.
Aside from that, coir is also very susceptible to staining unlike Seagrass and Sisal carpets. Water is one of the major contributors to staining coir as it leaves permanent marks on carpets made of such. If you want to use a carpet made of coconut coir, make sure you don’t put it in the kitchen, bathroom and outside where it is accessible by deposition as this will damage the carpet.
Purchasing Carpets Made of Coir
Despite its shortcomings, there are also advantages to purchasing carpets made of coir. First, these rugs are cheaper than others and have proven to be a great alternative. Retail price of such carpets range from £10 – £20 so it is definitely an inexpensive choice. Another great thing about such rugs is that there are many more options for carpet fitting that you can install at home. You can choose from 2, 4 and 5 meters with the right amount of tolerance that can easily fit into most hallways, corridors and homes.
Coir carpets may have its shortcomings but they have proven that they can still be functional.
